Charophytes

Charophytes (Charophyceae) along with the Coleochaetophyceae and Zygnematophyceae are the groups of green algae most closely related to the 'higher' or 'embryophyte' plants. Unlike most green algae, Chara is multicellular and exhibits a plant-like branching growth habit and has even been confused with submersed aquatic vascular plants such as coontail or hydrilla. Also known as stonewort, it has a distinctive musky odor. Strictly aquatic, Chara is a common waterplant in some Pineywoods ponds and reservoirs. For convenience the Chara gallery is grouped with the bryophytes even though they are only distantly related. To browse select 'Characeae' on the left menu.
