Charophytes (Chara)

Charophytes (Charophyceae) along with the Coleochaetophyceae and Zygnematophyceae are the groups of green algae most closely related to the 'higher' or 'embryophyte' plants. Unlike most green algae, Chara is multicellular and exhibits a plant-like branching growth habit and has even been confused with submersed aquatic vascular plants such as coontail (Ceratophyllum). Also known as stonewort, Chara has a distinctive musky odor. Strictly aquatic, Chara is a common waterplant in some east Texas ponds and reservoirs.
